Why we clean in Kodiak.

The island problem

Kodiak has a road system that runs about 50 miles and stops. There is no driving to the next town for a backup crew. There is no big metro cleaning franchise that will open a franchise here. The ferry comes twice a week. The airport is the airport.

What this means in practice: if a cleaning service on Kodiak flakes on you, you have no fallback. You reschedule the rental yourself, you do it yourself, or it does not get done. People who have rented out a cabin during salmon season know exactly what that feels like at 10 p.m. on a Saturday when guests are checking in Sunday morning.

Vacation rental turnovers are the clearest version of this problem. Salmon season runs June through September. During those months, a lot of Kodiak owners run weekly or biweekly turnovers on the same units, back to back. One missed clean cascades into a bad review, a refund request, and a headache that follows you into October. There is no slack in the schedule.

The households

A lot of Kodiak households are dual-income. Two people working full schedules, sometimes split shifts, kids in school, weather that comes in fast and brings mud and salt and fish smell with it. The house does not stay clean on its own. The cleaning piles up. And then a week gets eaten by it.

Hiring a cleaning service on Kodiak should not be a luxury item. It is a practical decision about where your time goes. We price it like that.

What the island does to a house

Kodiak salt air is not like other places. It gets into seals around windows. It oxidizes metal fixtures faster than the manufacturer specs assume. It works on door hardware, on screen meshes, on the grout between bathroom tiles. Generic cleaning products and generic routines ignore this. We do not.

Fish processing smells come home with people who work the harbor. Mud from Chiniak Road tracks in on boots. Wet wool and rubber gear get draped over things. These are not hypothetical Kodiak cleaning problems. They are the actual ones. We know which surface treatments hold up in salt-air conditions and which ones break down in a season. That knowledge comes from living here, not from a product training sheet.

HEPA vacuums matter here more than in most places. Pet hair from island dogs, fine particulate from weather events, dander that settles into carpet fibers. We use color-coded cloths so bathroom bacteria does not cross to kitchen surfaces. We do not move dust from one room to another.

Who we are

We are a small crew, Kodiak-based and Kodiak-staffed. Ash started Lighthouse under Psili Labs, the same company behind Northline and Dory. All three DBAs are built to serve Kodiak specifically, not as a national franchise template applied to a small island.

Everyone on the crew is background-checked. We carry $1M general liability and a $1M bond. You get the documentation before the first visit, without having to ask for it.

We keep accounts small on purpose. The same people come back to your place. They learn where the dust lands in your living room, which window track fills up first after a storm, how you like the furniture positioned. You do not brief a stranger on your own house every visit.

What we do not do

We do not have a tier system. Every clean gets the same standard. We do not skip the boring spots because the job ran long. We do not send a different person every week because dispatch is easier that way.

We do not oversell. On the way out, we tell you what we found: the damp corner under the sink, the mold start on the window sill, the filter that needs swapping. Things we noticed while we were there. We do not charge extra for the information.
